Width
The TV unit should be at least as wide as your television, ideally wider. A unit narrower than the screen looks unstable and unbalanced. A unit wider than the screen grounds the wall properly and leaves surface space for speakers, decor, or display items on either side.
Height
The centre of the screen should sit at seated eye level, roughly 100 to 110 cm from the floor for most Australian sofas. Measure the height of your TV unit plus the height of your television to calculate where the screen centre will fall. Too high causes neck strain. Too low and the viewing angle is uncomfortable over time.
Depth and Cable Access

A wooden TV unit sits in a high-traffic, heat-generating position in the home. A few simple habits protect the surface and extend the life of the finish significantly.
Heat and Electronics
Media equipment generates heat. Ensure adequate ventilation inside enclosed cabinet sections and avoid blocking ventilation slots on consoles and decoders. Sustained heat in an enclosed timber cabinet can cause warping and finish damage over time. Keep cabinet doors open periodically to allow airflow.
Daily Cleaning
Wipe with a soft dry or lightly damp cloth. Avoid spray cleaners directly on the timber surface as they can penetrate the finish and cause staining over time. For sticky residue, a small amount of mild soap diluted in water followed immediately by a dry cloth is sufficient.
Sunlight
In Australian living rooms with large north or west-facing windows, direct sunlight causes uneven fading on timber surfaces over time. A sheer blind or UV-filtering glass reduces this risk. If direct sunlight is unavoidable, rotate any decorative items on the surface periodically to prevent uneven tanning of the timber.
